The Saturday Pulse: Sleep Pathways Guild Briefing

June 13, 2026

Good morning, artifact-hunters and weekend warriors. It is Saturday, June 13. You made it to the weekend, and for those of you in Baltimore, welcome to ground zero. The APSS SLEEP 2026 Trainee Symposia and Fellow Boot Camp. Yesterday we touched on the incoming wave of home testing and smartphone apps. Today, we are looking at the legal realities of that AI tech, celebrating a big credentialing win, and strategizing your weekend hustle. Let's get into it.

🤖 Clinical Science & Tech: The AI Reality Check

We spent a lot of time this week discussing AI as a revolutionary diagnostic tool. But the honeymoon phase is over.

On Monday, Dr. Aatif Husain is leading a highly anticipated session at SLEEP 2026 focused entirely on the pitfalls of artificial intelligence in sleep medicine. They are tackling the global, legal, and training liabilities that could compromise data integrity and patient safety when AI is deployed carelessly.

The Reality Check: Algorithms are only as good as the raw data feeding them, and they do not have a license to lose. As AI increasingly encroaches on auto-scoring and preliminary diagnostics, your clinical intuition is the ultimate firewall. When the software confidently labels a 3-minute artifact storm as REM sleep, it is on you to correct it. Do not let an algorithm bully you into signing off on garbage data.

📜 Credentialing & Education: A BRPT Win

Let’s pause the conference hype for some excellent homegrown news. Yesterday, the BRPT officially announced the winner of the 2026 A-STEP/STAR Educational Grant.

Huge congratulations to Sierra Redd, who just secured the grant toward her educational program to become a fully credentialed RPSGT. Earning this credential is a grind, and financial barriers stop too many talented trainees from crossing the finish line.

If you are a Lead Tech or a lab manager reading this, take note. Support your un-credentialed night staff. Mentor them, help them prep for the boards, and make sure they know when these BRPT grants open up. We need more sharp techs in the trenches.

🎓 Free CEUs: The Farming Season Begins

For those of you not wandering the Inner Harbor in Baltimore this weekend, your job is to keep a close eye on your browser.

While the live general sessions start tomorrow, today’s educational boot camps mean the information dam is about to break. Watch the AASM and Sleep Research Society learning portals closely over the next 48 hours. As the major sessions conclude, sponsors and organizations will begin posting summary webinars and post-conference quizzes. Have your BRPT ID number handy and be ready to snatch up those freshly minted CEUs.

💼 RPSGT Job Board: Face-to-Face Leverage

If you are physically at SLEEP 2026 this weekend, remember that the conference floor is the most lucrative job board in the country.

  • Bypass the HR Black Hole: Lab directors and hospital network VPs are wandering the same halls you are. If you are looking to relocate, step into a management role, or pivot into clinical research, this is your moment. Have your resume ready, ditch the online application portals, and hand your credentials directly to the decision-makers at the networking mixers.
  • The Weekend Shift: For the rest of you holding down the fort in the lab tonight, remember that weekend shift differentials are your best friend. Keep the coffee strong, and don't be afraid to ask for premium PRN rates if they are begging you to cover a Sunday night call-out.

Check your calibrations, trust your eyes over the algorithm, and have a solid weekend. We will see you on the next shift.

The Saturday Pulse: Sleep Pathways Guild Briefing

Saturday, June 13, 2026

Good morning, artifact-hunters and weekend warriors. You made it to Saturday, and for those of you currently navigating the Baltimore Convention Center, welcome to ground zero. The APSS SLEEP 2026 conference officially kicks off today with the postgraduate courses and the Fellow Boot Camp. Whether you are shaking hands on the vendor floor or holding down the fort in a dark control room tonight, here is the intel you need to stay ahead of the curve.

🤖 Sleep Tech & Science: The AI Reality Check

We spend a lot of time talking about AI as the ultimate diagnostic cheat code, but today at SLEEP 2026, the honeymoon phase officially ends. The "AI Essentials for Sleep Medicine" postgraduate course is running all day, and they are tackling the hard realities: data integrity, legal liabilities, and the limitations of machine learning in complex patient populations.

The Reality Check: Algorithms are only as good as the raw data feeding them, and software doesn't hold a clinical license. As AI inevitably takes over preliminary auto-scoring, your clinical intuition becomes the ultimate firewall. When an algorithm confidently labels a three-minute artifact storm as REM sleep, it is on you to correct it. Do not let the tech bully you into signing off on garbage data.

📜 Credentialing Updates: A Massive BRPT Win

Let’s pause the conference hype for a major homegrown victory. Yesterday, the BRPT officially announced the winner of the 2026 A-STEP/STAR Educational Grant. Huge congratulations to Sierra Redd out of Hilo, Hawaii, who beat out a massive global pool of applicants to secure the funding for her RPSGT credentialing journey.

If you are a Lab Manager or a Lead Tech reading this: take notes. The financial barrier to credentialing is steep, and we lose too many sharp trainees because they can't afford the coursework. Support your un-credentialed night staff. Mentor them, prep them for the boards, and make sure they know exactly when these BRPT grants open up.

🎓 Education: The CEU Farming Season Begins

If you want to relocate, step into a management role, or pivot into clinical research, ditch the online application portals. Hand your resume directly to the decision-makers at the assembly mixers.
  • The Weekend Premium: For the rest of you clocking in tonight, remember your leverage. Hospitals are desperate to cover weekend nights. If they are begging you to pick up a PRN shift to cover a Sunday call-out, do not be afraid to ask for premium emergency pay. Your time is valuable.

Check your calibrations, trust your eyes over the algorithm, and finish your week strong. We will see you on the next shift.

When the Sleep Tech Can't Stay Awake

When the Sleep Tech Can't Stay Awake Shift Work Sleep Disorder: Diagnosis, Danger, and Treatment - A Sleep Technologist's Guide A Registered Polysomnographic Technologist's Guide to Shift Work Sleep Disorder Opening note I was PAP-compliant, my device data looked good, and yet I was exhausted. This is my experience with Shift Work Sleep Disorder (SWSD), how it's diagnosed, and practical steps that helped me stay safe and functional on night shifts. What Shift Work Sleep Disorder Is and Why It Matters Shift Work Sleep Disorder (SWSD) is a circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorder in which a recurring work schedule overlaps the body's biological night and produces insomnia and/or excessive sleepiness with measurable impairment. The ICSD-3 classifies SWSD under circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorders and emphasizes the temporal link between work schedule and symptoms. “Circadian rhythms such as the sleep-wake cycle are synchronized with 24-hour periodicity by environmental f...
